Microsoft’s next big event is happening on October 26 and in all likelihood, the Redmond-based software maker has few hardware devices to show off. For Microsoft, October has always been about Surface branded hardware. Last year, Microsoft stunned the world by announcing Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book.

However, it seems like a quite event this time around. According to ZDNet, Microsoft’s October 26 will be more about Windows 10 and less about Surface hardware. The focus is reportedly around Windows 10 Redstone 2 update and Microsoft is rn
Microsoft is widely rumoured to announce Surface All-in-One type device at this event. There are reports indicating Microsoft’s plan to announce a new type of Surface keyboard and mouse at this event. With Intel’s seventh gen Core i processors hitting notebooks, Microsoft would use the stage to demonstrate partner products – especially at a time when PC sales are going down globally.
One thing is certainly sure – Microsoft won’t be launching a new fitness band and there are also no likelihood of Surface branded smartphone. Lately, Microsoft has taken great deal of time to unify Windows 10 across platforms and recently delivered Project Centennial – which acts as a bridge between traditional Windows program and Windows Store apps.
Microsoft is currently two major software updates under Redstone 2, likely to be available next year. The Verge reports Microsoft will also showcase some cross platform gaming strategy tying Xbox deeper into Windows 10 at this event. Microsoft also doesn’t seem to be in a mood to refresh Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book with new Intel Kaby Lake processors. According to The Verge, Microsoft won’t be refreshing existing Surface devices and will showcase OEM products instead.

If you are invested on Microsoft’s Windows 10 ecosystem or invested on Forza Motorsport then this event might set the future of both the platform – which are technically becoming one. Microsoft’s event is scheduled for October 26 at 10 AM Eastern time and do stay tuned for more updates just ahead of the launch.

apple to unify cloud service teams

Apple to unify cloud service teams to compete with Google, Amazon

Apple cloud services teams run by executive Eddy Cue, including Siri, Maps, iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple News and parts of iTunes and Apple Music, will move together into the company’s existing Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, California, the people said. Currently, most Apple services are developed separately from each other in office parks rented out in other parts of Cupertino and Sunnyvale, California.
Another person with knowledge of the matter said that Cue’s team will be located in at least three different locations across Silicon Valley.
The current structure contributes to software bugs and slow product development, the people said. Bringing the teams together at a single, dedicated campus is designed to improve growth of the services business and fight competition from Google and Amazon, the people added. They did not want to be identified talking about private Apple plans. Apple declined to comment. Another person said that it’s always been part of Apple’s culture to house teams together, where possible.

As iPhone growth slows and Apple goes behind the scenes to develop new hardware, the services business has been a bright spot. It grew almost 20 percent in the third quarter and may soon pass the Mac and iPad as Apple’s second-largest revenue source. Still, Apple’s cloud services have been criticized by users because of technical issues and a lack of new features. The company also stumbled in 2008 with MobileMe and in 2012 with Maps.
Cloud Space
Space for the cloud teams at the current headquarters will begin to open as Apple inches toward the launch of Apple Campus 2, a futuristic, circular structure with multiple floors of open work space. Apple will begin moving employees there in 2017, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in March. Apple broke ground on the new campus in 2013, following a well-documented announcement by company co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.
While many Apple executives want to relocate their teams to the new campus, Cue thinks unifying at the old campus is a suitable way to improve his organization, one of the people said.

A committee of Apple managers is working on the plan to reorganize Apple across its current and future locations. Apple originally expected up to 13,000 employees at the new campus. Apple anticipates that the number may grow and recently discussed plans to adjust internal office space if necessary, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The new building features open floor plans and few traditional offices. While some of Apple’s senior vice presidents are expected to see their offices move over to the new campus — less than a five minute drive from the current headquarters — management must be at a vice president level or above to get a formal office, one of the people said. Previous plans included office space for senior directors, who report to vice presidents. Another person said that some employees below vice president will be eligible for offices.
The new campus will include bench seating, long work tables, and open cubicle spaces, potentially irking employees used to quiet office environments, two people briefed on the new campus’s plans said. Apple’s presentations to the city of Cupertino have indicated that the open floor plan designs are conducive to collaboration between teams.
Apple’s Pie
Apple is also reorganizing its cloud computing resources to bolster its services business. The company is moving its infrastructure — things like software to process Siri queries and Apple Music downloads — onto a single, Apple-made system, according to people familiar with the matter. Code-named Pie, the platform gives Apple more control and may speed up load times.
Apple has begun moving over parts of Siri, the iTunes Store, and Apple News to the new platform, one of the people said. Apple plans to move other services, including Maps, to its new system over the next few years. Apple has also developed an internal photo storage system dubbed McQueen to gradually end its reliance on Google and Amazon servers, the people said.
The company recently indicated it is taking the cloud more seriously by hiring former Time Warner Cable executive Peter Stern as a vice president leading cloud

Iphone 7 camera -probably the best in the world

The Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will start selling in India from today. The iPhone 7 series brings in a lot of new features. But the one thing that has captured everyone’s attention the most is the dual camera on the Apple iPhone 7 Plus. While a lot of other companies too have phones with dual rear cameras, Apple is doing it differently.
The iPhone 7 Plus has a wide angle lens and a 56mm equivalent telephoto lens at the rar. So when you shoot you have the option to click the 2X button and jump to zoom in a jiffy. Hold on to this 2X button and you get a dial that lets you zoom all the way up to 10x for photos. Up to 2X is optical zoom and the rest is digital. The zoom works across photo modes like panorama and square. The zoom is, however, limited to 6x when you are shooting video. You can zoom in on slowmotion too.
Since most of the other aspects of the phone is already known, we decided to take the Apple iPhone 7 Plus for a spin on the first day we had it. The results this 12MP camera can throw up are really great. But we don’t need to tell you about it. You can see the evidence below.

This is a regular shot of one of the monuments at the Lodhi Gardens in New Delhi. You can see the details the camera has been able to capture.
Apple is touting the vivid colours the phone can capture. These photos give a good idea of what vibrant colours and details can do to an image.

Now for the zoom. From 1x to 2x this is no distortion at all. And that is thanks to the optical zoom. If you zoom further the results will start showing a bit of noise as in other smartphone cameras. However, the dial is very interesting and it maybe the fastest zoom I have seen and that includes point and shoot cameras. You almost have to ensure you don’t overshoot the subject with the zoom.

In video, the zoom is limited to the point where the picture is still good. So videos shot in full zoom are not really bad.

The Huawei P9 too has a dual camera, one of which is black and white. This helps it create great contrast. The dual cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus too seems to have a similar capability offering constraints as well as detail where needed.
I have always been a low light photographer. Now before you think I am a dimwit behind the lens let me tell you this is mostly about being averse to using the flash. The iPhone 7 series has a f/1.8 aperture that caters to this fetish. While in a moderately lit room this tends to bring in some extra exposure which you might need to control, I discovered that this takes smartphone photography to a whole new level when you are in certain circumstances. Inside the basement of one of the monuments, I was astounded by the amount of light this camera could suck in. I could see the cobwebs on the roof of this centuries old structure as well as the detail on the time weathered wall. And while shooting video, the camera adjusted automatically as I walked in from the sun into this dimly lit cell. Then the two earthen vessels on the ground with light seeping in through the small door. That’s the moment the phone sold itself to me.

There is one more really fascinating feature which I have seen in a couple of demos, but not been able to try myself. The portrait feature will be rolled out as an update soon and till then we have just the photos Apple showed off at its launch. But during the demo I could see how the feature blurs the background keeping just the subject in focus like top-end DSLR. And the camera saves a version of the photo without the bokey effect too. I will wait till I get to try this out.

Then the 7MP iSight camera. No, it doesn’t have a beauty mode, but still manages to make even my mug look presentable.
For now, the iPhone 7 Plus camera itself makes this a worthy upgrade for people bitten by the photo bug. With the zoom, low light capabilities and the impending portrait feature, this phone might actually start replacing at least some non-serious DSLR purchases. For now, the best cameras in comparison are the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 — if it manages to make a comeback — the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and the Moto Z with its Hasselblad Mod.
Samsung Electronics seemed to have its smartphone troubles under control – until authorities had to evacuate a Southwest Airlines flight in Kentucky last week for an incident that involved a replacement phone.
The reason: Authorities said a Samsung smartphone started smoking and making “popping” noises, just moments after its owner had boarded the plane and turned off the device.
Passenger Brian Green, 43, says the device was a Galaxy Note 7 he had picked up from an authorized AT&T retailer Sept. 21 as a replacement for another Note 7 phone he returned when Samsung announced a global recall a week earlier. The recall came after a series of incidents last month in which Note 7 batteries overheated or caught fire. But Samsung had promised that the replacement models were safe.Reports of more replacement phones catching fire are trickling in, and the South Korean tech giant faces more scrutiny after earlier criticism for being slow to react and sending confusing signals in the first days of the recall.
“They’re in a really tricky spot,”said Ben Bajarin, a tech industry analyst with the Creative Strategies research firm. “There’s such a stigma around this device now that it’s hard to see how sales can do well going forward.”
Consider Green’s reaction: “I really liked the device. It had a lot of nice features,” he told The Associated Press in an interview Friday. But after the incident on the plane, he bought a new iPhone 7 from Apple, rather than take his chances with yet another Samsung Note. “At this point, I don’t want to mess with it anymore.”
Authorities haven’t confirmed what model of Samsung phone was involved in last week’s incident. A spokeswoman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday that her agency is still investigating and had no further information.
AT&T, one of the nation’s largest phone retailers, said Sunday that it will stop giving customers the replacement phones.
“We’re no longer exchanging new Note 7s at this time, pending further investigation of these reported incidents,” A&T said in a statement.
AT&T encouraged customers with Note 7 phones to exchange them for other products. The company says it hasn’t sold Note 7 phones since the initial recall was announced.
Verizon, another major seller of smartphones, said it doesn’t have any Note 7 phones but they are on back order. Sprint said customers can exchange their replacement Note 7 phones for any other device while the situation is being investigated.
Meanwhile, other customers have reported problems with their replacement phones.
A Minnesota father says his daughter suffered a minor burn to her thumb when her replacement Samsung smartphone melted in her hand last week.
Andrew Zuis of Farmington, a Twin Cities suburb, said his daughter, Abby, was holding the Galaxy Note 7 in her left hand Friday when it melted. Zuis told The Associated Press on Sunday that the family had acquired the new phone on the day the replacement phones were released. There had been no problem with the original phone, he said.
“It’s very fortunate Abby was not injured and was holding the phone,” Zuis said. “If it was in her pocket, I think it would have been a whole different situation. I’m just very disappointed in Samsung and their product.”
Zuis provided KSTP-TV with receipts showing that the family bought a Galaxy Note 7 in August and then exchanged it Sept. 21 after Samsung announced the recall.
“She’s done with Note 7s right now,” Zuis said of his daughter.
A Samsung representative told KSTP that an investigation is underway.
“We want to reassure our customers that we take every report seriously and we are engaged with the Zuis family to ensure we are doing everything we can for them and their daughter,” the representative said in a statement.
On Saturday, Michael Klering, a Kentucky resident, said on Facebook that his exchanged Note 7 phone caught fire. Klering wrote on Facebook that he and his wife woke up because their bedroom was filling with smoke, and they feared that their children were in danger.
Klering wrote that he and his wife now have bronchitis and are being treated. He said he doesn’t feel the company is taking the situation seriously enough.
Commission officials and Samsung announced a formal recall Sept. 15 after authorities said they received 92 reports of Note 7 batteries overheating in the US, including 26 reports of burns and 55 cases of property damage. Authorities urged consumers to turn off the phones and return them for a refund or replacement. Samsung said replacement models that were free of defects became available in this country Sept. 21.
After the Southwest Airlines incident, representatives of the four leading US wireless carriers said customers who had already received replacement Note 7 phones could return those new devices if they have concerns.
The Galaxy Note 7, which sells for $850 to $890, competes in the high-end smartphone market with Apple, which recently released a new iPhone 7, and other premium brands such as Google’s new Pixel phones.
Samsung says it has recalled about 2.5 million Note 7 devices around the world since problems emerged last month. Analysts estimated the recall would cost the South Korean tech giant as much as $1.8 billion.
Still, the company said Friday that its third-quarter profit still rose 6 percent, to about $7 billion, on total sales of $43.9 billion _ thanks to income from Samsung’s other products, which include advanced computer chips and high-end smartphone displays.
The Note 7 isn’t Samsung’s biggest seller. The company sold 76 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2016, most of them lower-priced models. Among higher-priced models, Bajarin estimated that Samsung sold well over 10 million Galaxy S7 phones, or four times as many as the Note 7, which has a digital stylus and other distinctive features.
But Bajarin said he’s heard some independent manufacturers may cut production of cases and accessories for the Note 7, in light of slipping sales. He also suggested that some wireless carriers may be hesitant to promote the Note 7 heavily in their retail stores.
As for Green, the Indiana businessman told The Associated Press that he had checked to make sure the phone he got on Sept. 21 had the packaging marks and a green battery indicator that Samsung said would show it wasn’t subject to the recall.
“I don’t know what else you’re supposed to do,” he said.
A photo of the phone’s packaging, which Green provided to The Associated Press, shows a black square on the label, which Samsung has said would indicate a non-defective phone. The label also has an identifying number that, when typed into Samsung’s recall website, returns a message that says, “Great News! Your device is NOT in the list of affected devices.”
Green said he had no problems with the replacement until Oct. 5, when the smoke caused him to pull the device from the front pocket of his jeans. After authorities ordered everyone off the plane, Green said he later saw singe marks on his jeans. An airline representative said the phone scorched the carpet where Green left the device on the airplane floor.
After speaking with authorities by phone last week, Green said he had an appointment to meet with them Monday. In a statement last week, Samsung said there was “no evidence that this incident is related to the new Note7.” Samsung and AT&T representatives didn’t respond Friday to a reporter’s questions about how a defective phone might have been provided as a replacement after the recall.

Windows 10 update causing problems again

build 14393.222

Yesterday, Microsoft released Windows 10 build 14393.222 to production, following its release to the Release Preview ring a couple days before. It seems, though, that the build isn’t playing too nicely with a lot of people’s systems.
Users have been taking to Twitter and Microsoft’s support forums to report issues installing the build, whereby the update will just fail, as noted by Mary Jo Foley.

When the update fails, it will attempt to revert the changes it has made so far. In some instances, this process may also fail and result in an infinite loop. In other cases, attempting the update several times (sometimes more than 10) will allow the update to finally succeed and it will install as expected. This problem affects a large number of users and has been classified as “widespread,” however, not all users are affected.
Microsoft has been working with some users on obtaining logs for the issue, however, no confirmation of an upcoming workaround or fix has been announced yet. This issue, however, does again raise the question of “what’s the point of the Insider Program if Microsoft doesn’t listen?” – a question that has been asked numerous times before when issues have gone unresolved, despite going through the various testing rings.
